1837 50C "Authentic Counterfeit"
Anyone got the skinny on this coin?
My buddy has one in AU condition. His dad left it to him. Recently, he went down to the local coin shop and the dealer told him it was an authentic counterfeit and offered him $12. Luckily he had the sense to run out with his coin... He then decided to call me and ask for my help. I'm thinking the mint may have reproduced the coin at a later year? However, I cannot find any definitive info on it. I have no experience with half dollars or 50 cent pieces. I have no pics for you - sorry. But, the obverse does read 50c instead of 50 Cent, so it is phoney baloney for sure. But, is it a worthwhile phoney baloney coin? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Re: 1837 50C "Authentic Counterfeit"
According to my Red Book, the 1837 should say "50 Cents" so something seems a little bit off.
You might also try emailing the guy on this page: http://www.coinresource.com/articles/capped_bust.htm I'm not sure if it's a capped bust or not, but sounds like it might be. I'd try getting a weight and a pic of the coin. |
Re: 1837 50C "Authentic Counterfeit"
I know it's counterfeit for sure. I just don't know anything about the counterfeit market or 50 cent coins - they simply bore me...
For example: some Counterfeit Confederate notes are worth way more than legit Confederate notes. So, if the same holds true for coins, I was thinking an "Authentic Counterfeit" coin may be worth something. I actually called two friends about it. One of whom is a grader - he told me he could get into trouble if he answered my question and left me hanging... Also left me thinking that NGC might be the way to go with this one... With their new label category and all. BOB - By the way, the Red Book stinks - gotta use the Blue Book instead and trust me I checked it first. But, thank-you anyway! |

There was a book listed in that link I provided which may help you.

Yeah man... Thanks so much! See, this is why I posted here. Much appreciated - it's a start! Way more info than I found out and I worked for a dealer...

I'd also email the guy at that link cause he seems to know something about the counterfeits. His email is at the bottom.

Re: 1837 50C "Authentic Counterfeit"
RossL,
You are the second best! God is first! And as they say on the streets of NYC, "Good-lookin out, YO"! But, that coin is the real deal and not an "Authentic Counterfeit". I'm working on getting a pic - it may take me a while, unless my buddy logs on and posts one himself, however, he is lazy as sheit... That's why he asked me too find out about the coin... lololol Nonetheless: Thanks! |
